ASTEP

The Alberta Spit Tobacco Program (ASTEP) is a partnership between AADAC and the following organizations.

• National (U.S.) Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP)
• Alberta's Regional Health Authorities
• University of Alberta Dental School
• Alberta Cancer Board
• Alberta Dental Hygienists Association

ASTEP focuses on youth prevention and targets areas of high use, including rural communities, and sports such as hockey and rodeo.

Program goals

• Raise the profile of spit tobacco use as a health issue in Alberta
• Increase awareness about the harms associated with spit tobacco use
• Remove the positive association of spit tobacco use with sport - especially rodeo and hockey
• Increase the ability of oral health professionals and others to address spit tobacco use
