Closure is . . Saying goodbye
Celebrating the togetherness, celebrating accomplishments - big or small!
Honouring the time spent together, expressing thanks and appreciation
Feeling the feelings - sadness, joy or fear
Acknowledging regrets or missed opportunities . . .
Exploring ways to stay supported . . .
And opening oneself to the new and unknown . . .
Closure is . . Saying goodbye, and welcoming the new . . .
Celebrating what was, what is, and what might be . . .
Taking time for closure is an important element of life that is often missed in contemporary society. Without proper closure, individuals and groups can feel "unfinished" without knowing why.
Saying "goodbye" is a way to acknowledge the end, grieve the loss, as all endings entail loss, and prepare oneself for the new. When closure and the opportunity to grieve are missed, people hold on, and find it difficult to prepare for the new. New opportunities may be missed.
Saying "goodbye" and experiencing closure as a group can be very powerful. The activity itself brings about closure and invites the new while providing a sense of connectedness.
As another school year draws to a close, take time with your group or team to honour the time you've had together.
Take time to share and say those important goodbyes!
