Getting What You Want

Setting goals is a big part of recovery. Your goals direct and guide your life. They can keep you motivated to stay off alcohol, other drugs or gambling, and keep you focused on getting the life you want.

Here are some tips on setting goals:

  • Don’t make your goals too easy. Your goals should challenge you.
  • Don’t make your goals too hard. You’re more likely to stick to a goal if you believe it is attainable and realistic.
  • Make your goals specific. The best goals are concrete and measurable. This means that you and others will be able to see what the completed goal will look like, and when it will be completed.
  • Focus on what you can change. There are some things we can’t change, such as other people and the past. Make your goals about you, and about the here and now.
  • Break big goals into little parts. You might have to tackle some of your bigger goals step by step.
  • Make your goals your own. Your goals should be about things that are important to you, not just what others may think is best. Ask yourself, "What do I value? What do I want? Does this goal fit with who I believe I am?"

Once you’ve taken time to figure out your goals, write them down. Putting your goals on paper will help you stay focused on them, which will give you a better chance of turning them into reality.

Try to think of any roadblocks, barriers or beliefs within yourself that might prevent you from achieving your goals. Then think about your personal strengths. How will they help you get past these barriers?

Follow your goal-setting with an action plan to make your goals happen. If you’ve given yourself a certain time to achieve a goal, use a calendar to keep track of important dates. Make a list of people who will support you, and ask for help when you need it.

Every time you achieve one of your goals, savour it. There’s no better high than reaching a goal you’ve had to work long and hard for.
