Throughout our lives, we build ourselves by developing life skills. Some of these skills are talents and abilities we’ve had for as long as we can remember. Some are taught to us. Others we learn on our own from past experiences. But whether our skills are the basics like walking, talking and feeding ourselves, or special aptitudes that help us make friends, build healthy relationships, do well in school or get a job, the skills we develop help us live our lives.
The life skills you develop often define who you are. Being able to think about situations in your life and deal with them correctly is a talent you probably already have. But that talent will only get you so far. Developing these life skills takes practice. Practising these skills allows you to look at yourself openly and honestly, and enables you to change things about your life that aren’t going the way you would like.
Developing positive life skills also lets you listen when other people tell you things about yourself you may not want to hear. It lets you take responsibility for your behaviour and start doing what it takes to get the life you want.
