Resolving Ambivalence

Ambivalence is what you feel when you aren’t sure one way or the other about something. Ambivalence is a pretty common feeling, which might be why there are plenty of expressions people use to describe it:
  • “I’m on the fence.”
  • “I’m caught between a rock and a hard place.”
  • “I have mixed emotions.”
  • “It’s six of one, half a dozen of the other.”

Ambivalence is something you may be feeling if you’re concerned about your drinking, other drug use or gambling. You may be pulled in different directions. To do it or not to do it: that is the question.

Is it easy to resolve ambivalence? Well, yes and no! You’ve probably got reasons to support each decision. But it’s often helpful to look at both sides at once. When you’ve done that, it will be easier for you to know why you’re making the decisions that you are.
