Creating Solutions for High-Risk Situations

Your high-risk situations are the ones that are most challenging for you in your recovery. Having a plan to approach these situations can be a valuable step toward your success.
  • Be persistent in following your plan. You’re on a new track.
  • Keep repeating your new coping strategies and new types of behaviour. They will gradually get easier and easier, until they eventually become good habits.
  • Take small steps when you find yourself in a high-risk situation. Remember, it’s those small one-step-at-a-time successes that lead to big successes.

Choose two situations that you think are the biggest risks for your progress at this time. Then do the following for each situation:

  • Describe each high-risk situation in your own words.
  • List three ways you will cope with the situation—without using alcohol or other drugs.
  • Write the name of someone who will support you if you need it.
